Strawberries in the Twilight Zone

"It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call -- the Twilight Zone." The twilight zone is home to many of Earth's uniquely weird creatures, and one of them is so weird and cute that it must be brought to light.

The Strawberry Squid is a small type of cock-eyed squid found in some of the darkest parts of the Atlantic Ocean. It is named for strawberry-colored cells called photophores that dot its skin and provide its distinctive glow. This amazing creature only gets to be about 39 inches long. As cute as this little squid is, don't be fooled. It's been known to commit acts of cannibalism. Squid isn't the only thing on the menu for this mysterious creature, it also likes to feed on various types of shrimp and fish. Its hunting style is not unique to it is species but is still fascinating, nonetheless. Like other twilight zone inhabitants, it hides during the day and floats to the surface at night to hunt, using its big yellow eye to look above to the surface to search for food swimming above, detecting changes in light. Its smaller blue eye looks below searching for bioluminescence. The Strawberry squid is not safe they are hunted by Sperm Whales, Russo's dolphins, Seabirds, Sharks, Tuna, and Lancetfish.

There is not much known about these creatures. The more you support deep-sea exploration, the more we shall learn to check out the "Get Involved"> "Donate" to see my list of the ocean.
